Field guide

Your first points program

Choose an earning rule, build a small noncash reward menu and make redemption easy to explain.

Practical guidance · examples to adapt · not legal or financial advice

1. Pick the earning mode

Choose whole points per eligible dollar before tax and tips, rounded down, or a fixed positive integer per qualifying paid visit. Per-dollar earning requires the eligible paid amount; a scan never earns.

2. Build a simple catalog

Name each item, service add-on or discount and set a positive integer point cost. Start with rewards you can reliably honor. For example, an 80-point coffee and a 120-point pastry are illustrative choices.

3. Explain what points are

Points are private program progress, not cash or gift cards. They cannot be bought, transferred or cashed out. They currently do not expire; do not add unsupported expiry promises.

4. Review scope and draft

Use Programs → Loyalty → Points or Milo’s guided setup. Summit can choose Shared or One location. Check merchant terms, catalog costs and earning before saving, then launch separately as owner.

5. Practice fulfillment

Staff review the selected reward, cost and balance before confirming. Provide the item or discount in the register. Refunds reverse original earned points; negative balances offset new earnings. Closing or trial expiry preserves valid fulfillment.
